The summer festival season is almost upon us again – this is a good thing. For people into music that doesn’t conjure up images of Pukekos playing touch next to a henna tattoo stall, this usually means The Big Day Out, (maybe) Camp A Low Hum and the new-ish St Jerome’s Laneway. After a mildly disappointing BDO lineup (Soundgarden fans versus Kanye West’s everyone else) it was good to see some megaton bombs being dropped by dear-old St Jerome. Here’s a bit of why I’m excited for the 30th of January down at the Tank Farm.

The Horrors oblig. massive act to get excited about. Dudes have played here only once before (at a Big Day Out, no less) and were a highlight. No chicken drummer legs here, mate.
The Horrors – I Can’t Control Myself

EMA kinda new to me, but when the list dropped a few people around worth listening to went “oh fuck yea, EMA” etc. Erika M. Anderson is a 6ft tall Nordic bombshell from South Dakota. That’s in America, but she looks a bit like Robin and sucks no where near as much, so it’s a good thing to get in on.
EMA – The Grey Ship

Shayne P. Carter Flying Nun stalwart Shayne Carter is doing a selection of songs from across his career, spanning over 20 years. There was a good buzz about his shows featuring this material earlier in the year, so it’s cool to have a chance to check it out in the field. Dude couldn’t be more of a chill bro with the hecklers, either.
Dimmer – Crystalator

Transistors Christchurch dweebs The Transistors are a good fit for Laneway – noisy, fast paced garage. They always put on a good show when they’re up in New Zealand’s best city, going to make sure I show up early enough to be drunk enough to see these.

Opossom is the new post-Mint Chicks thing for Kody Nielson. I haven’t heard anything from it yet (not sure it exists), but if the success brother Ruban is having with his Unknown Mortal Orchestra is any indicator, it could be pretty special. Or it could suck shit. That’s the magic of it all!

Possible joke option:

Girls from San Francisco should be bang-on summertime fodder. And their singer used to be in a siq cult which should make being on the bill next to New York’s Cults at least marginally tolerable.

Anyway, that’s what’s good. Here’s the full ticket so you can gasp at the ones I left off.

Anna Calvi, Austra, Cults, EMA, Feist, Girls, Glasser, Gotye, Laura Marling, M83, Opossom, Pajama Club, SBTRKT, Shayne P. Carter, The Horrors, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Toro Y Moi, Transistors, Twin Shadow, Washed Out, Wu Lyf, Yuck
